I recently watched a report on one of the nightly news shows about Americans now through away food as much as they do trash! That is astonishing. Are you guilty of over purchasing items such as produce, meats and dairy. Then the dreaded expiration date hits before you can eat all the goodness you just bought? Things happen, suddenly you were invited out to dinner, get sick, get home to late to want to prepare that meal you bought all the ingredients you just bought. So, here are some food waste solutions. Below are some ideas on how to conquer food waste.
“The NRDC report said Americans discard 40 percent of the food supply every year, and the average American family of four ends up throwing away an equivalent of up to $2,275 annually in food.” by The Huffington Post
1. Plan Plan Plan. Ex. If you shop once a week and know you will be able to consumer 1 apple a day then buy 6 apples for the week. (one less then planned)
2. Plan your meals and figure out your portions by weight sizes of the meat. For instance, ground beef. How many ounces will you need per serving?
3. Did you make to much food? Freeze the extra in a single serving container. You can have this for lunch. Sometimes you don’t want to eat the same thing the next day or before it goes bad. This saves not only money, but TIME!
4. Watch the expiration dates on products.
5. Compost your food waste, and use it for gardening.
What are some ways you can prevent food waste?
